Prep for tomorrow's lesson: Consider the following essay question which we will be tackling in class:
How does Kelman highlight the struggles
of urban life in Pigeon English?
Pigeon English Harri describes X Fire as having: “chocolate
milk and cigarette breath”. This juxtaposition symbolises the contrast in XFire
– he is a child but also a dangerous adult. Chocolate milk is a symbol of innocence,
the need for nurture and a shows that XFire is still a child himself and
requires nurturing. However the cigarette are associated with the loss of
childhood and adulthood, they also are a symbol of disease and cause death.
XFire also has in part very much left his childhood and entered a dangerous, ‘cancerous’
world. In addition, just as cigarettes harm others through passive smoking,
perhaps by using this description of XFire, Harri alludes to the dangers of
dying by being in close proximity to Xfire. This highlights the dangers of
gangs, but also highlights Kelman’s desire to show the reader that they too are
children and have lost their innocence.
